What are Sports Fixtures?
Sports Fixtures are simply a list of teams/individuals within the same sporting league who will play or compete against each other at least once, typically twice. For example a Football League Fixture provides a list of football teams by team name, the teams are then scheduled to play each other through the football season with the aim being for each team to play each other twice, one game being at the home teams stadium, the second being at the away teams stadium.
What are Sports Fixtures used for?
Sports Fixtures are used by:
- Individual Teams - To plan and prepare for specific games through the season, specifically focusing training around perceived key games (such as a long standing adversary or a particularly strong team they wish to beat in order to gain league table advantage).
- Sporting Authority Administration - To plan out commitments for referee attendance where applicable, to track official league progress, to facilitate a succesful, controlled league execution, typically in legs (sporting legs being the term used to define a set of games, played between the league teams at regular intervals, typically once or twice per week throughout the league season (depending on league size / number of participating teams).
- Sport Fans - to coordinate their attendance at their teams home and away matches, particularly important when away games require transport and accommodation.
- Media - Obviously depending on the league type, popularity and fan base following. In large, popular sporting fixtures, the media are always keen to know the sports fixtures as early as possible so they can bid for media coverage rights, buy exclusive media coverage rights or agree shared rights with other media companies. The Media also use sports schedules to plan the logistics for moving the heavy and expensive equipment in a timely manner to allow the correct setup to provide appropriate coverage of the game.
